We recently hosted international Winemaker Bert Salomon at Links Hope Island for a wine dinner to show off some of his Austrian whites & Australian reds. The event was wonderful and the wines were just great.
Bert was only in town for a few days and wanted to take advantage of his time here and get out and see a couple of his clients so he made arrangements to do a couple of tastings. One of the customers was Bubbles on Cove bottle shop at Sanctuary Cove. It was a humble little affair over the afternoon. Obviously the wines were great but the venue also impressed me. It’s a moderately sized square room with a small outdoor lounge area. In the middle is a u-shaped bar. It is bottle shop come tapas bar. You can pick from the shelf and sit down and drink it with a small service charge. Wines are priced incredibly sharply and the selection is just brilliant with good local and international representation.
The manager is Terry from wine distribution company FESQ & prior to that Kirra Tavern cellar. He knows his wines and is a wonderful guy to talk to no matter what your level of wine knowledge. Tapas is available from a near by restaurant and can be ordered from the bottle shop which the staff go and get it for you, magic!
What really impressed me was that every time I visit my mate in Adelaide he blows me out of the water with some brilliant little joint whether it be a restaurant, a cellar door, a coffee shop or any one of a million things that breeds in a multicultural food & wine region, bastard! But now I had a place I am proud to take my wine and food focused friends. Thanks Terry. We still have a long way to go on the Coast but that was a bloody good start and ever since the Rice paddy closed there was only Verve restaurant at Broadbeach so now there are 2 cool places on the Gold Coast.
I need to say that it is owned by the same people behind Absinthe restaurant & Absinthe bakery. Although I respect both I feel Bubbles bottle shop is in a different league due to it’s more wholesome delivery of good products at good prices and has far more integrity than the other 2 businesses.
Next time you are up the northern end of the Gold Coast drop in and check it out, Even if it’s for nothing more than to get some bloody good booze at a bloody good price. Terry also has some amazing Aussie boutique and imported beers for those occasions when you really need a cleansing ale.
Bubbles on Cove, a European style bottle shop & wine bar where you can purchase wine at bottle shop prices but can stay and drink!
