If you were to accuse Ian Callahan - owner of Adelaide’s’ Bar 9 -  of being a coffee geek, he’d probably take a quick internal look at himself and reply with a grin, ‘fair enough!’ 

Neither geeky nor nerdy, Ian is an absolute genius when it comes to coffee.  Waitersfriend did however have to ask, “do you ever find yourself spending a little too much time surfing coffee websites?” - to which came a rather sheepish reply of, “yes, but my wife Sarah kicks me off when she thinks I’ve had my daily intake.”

The newly approved Award system from the Federal Government sure looks like another kick in the guts for the hospitality industry in Australia.  For an industry that has such little profit yield from total turnover, it seems ludicrous that we would be expected to pay higher labour costs to staff.  I completely understand the desire to improve people’s quality of life but the only outcome I see to this is reduced hours due to higher costs and increased workload on an already overworked industry.  I am not sure about you but I can’t remember the last venue I saw where [read more...]
