The Amazing Cucumber

This article has been doing the email rounds for quite some time but Waitersfriend decided it deserves a place on our site

This information was in The New York Times as part  of their “Spotlight on the Home” series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.    1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one  cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.   2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a [read more...]

Heathcote Cellar & Store

On a tour through the Victorian wine fields Waitersfriend was more than impressed by the wines of Heathcote.  Something that really caught our attention was the wonderful Cellar & Store.  The team here represents Heathcote extremely well with an abundance of local produce and of course excellent coverage of the region’s wines.  Throughout the year Heathcote Cellar & Store hold a great many events and tastings and have agreed to keep Waitersfriend up to date with all the goings ons.  Rachel Paterson is also supplying us with all the background information on Cellar & Store and is promising a wrap [read more...]

Waitersfriend travels to Europe

Waitersfriend is heading to Europe and is hoping some of our readers might have a travel tip or two to share with us.  All our travel and accommodation is well organised so it’s just a matter of filling in our days abroad with as much fun as three waiters could possibly handle.  Of course there will be an obvious desire to get into all manner of food and wine adventures, but any must see sights or cultural activities are most welcome.

Cos Restaurant Adelaide

Great longish lunch today at Adelaide’s Leigh Street Cos Restaurant.  Specializing in aged beef they have a nifty beverage list and a charming dining room. On arrival a Mac’s brewery “Black Mac” from NZ was a great starting point.  Torbreck Semillon from the Barossa and 42 Degrees South bubbles from Tassies Frogmore Creek winery made a great accompaniment to the Cos shared entrée tasting plate.

A Coonawarra 05 Parker Estate Cab Sav was superb with aged Scotch Fillet accompanied by truffled mash and a Gorgonzola Brandy butter sauce.  Just know I’m going to end up in Hell via cardiac arrest from that [read more...]

A little gem on the Coast

We recently hosted international Winemaker Bert Salomon at Links Hope Island for a wine dinner to show off some of his Austrian whites & Australian reds. The event was wonderful and the wines were just great.

Bert was only in town for a few days and wanted to take advantage of his time here and get out and see a couple of his clients so he made arrangements to do a couple of tastings. One of the customers was Bubbles on Cove bottle shop at Sanctuary Cove. It was a humble little affair over the afternoon. Obviously the wines were great [read more...]

Dan Murphy’s assault on distribution

Waitersfriend has just been informed through a very close source that Woolworths owned Dan Murphy’s is going in to the distribution business. ALM or Australian Liquor Marketers will lose the near $500,000,000.00 contract to supply the chain.

One would ask if this will spell the end of ‘ALM’ & ‘Harbottle on Premise’ distributors. If Woolworths track record is anything to go by you would have to assume this is the start of the distribution business not the end. And if that is the case then what is the business plan? I would suggest that there would be some wonderful synergies between [read more...]

The Cooks Pantry

The Cooks Pantry, at the corner of Jetty Street and Military Road in Adelaide’s metro beach suburb of Grange, is where you’ll find James Bodroghy purveying over his organic produce, fashioning it into an array of take home meals, and a selection of relishes, pickles, and preserves.  You can stop in for a coffee and a bite to eat, as James begins his day baking organic foccaccia which by lunch time is on display packed with mouth watering fillings.  There’s always a selection of fresh fruit and veg and it’s not long before you’re thinking to yourself, I wish my [read more...]

Aria - Brisbane

Waitersfriend recently dined at Matt Moran’s new Aria Restaurant in Brisbane.  We had heard a lot about it before we went but most of it from a parochial local crowd who we suspect may have been influenced by the fact that Aria comes from the arch nemesis and number one rival, Sydney.

It wasn’t that long ago that Brisbane and QLD were the butt of every redneck joke in NSW.  In fact, after decades of snubbing it is only in recent times that the Good Food Guide has even bothered supporting the food & wine scene that is now making a large [read more...]
